Vernon Arnold, age 23 years of the Army Air Corps was Killed In Action over Germany, according to word received by his wife, Mrs. Betty Joe Plain Arnold from the War Department a few days ago. The family received a message in May that he was Missing In Action following a raid on April 29.  Young Arnold was the son of Mrs. Ethel Talbott Arnold, the grandson of Mrs. Clara Talbott and the brother of Mrs. Dorothy Burke, all of Indianapolis, formerly of Greencastle. Mr. Arnold was born and reared in Greencastle and he was a graduate of the local high school.  He entered the service in 1942.

Vernon Arnold, pilot of a bomber plane over Germany was reported Missing In Action following a raid on April 29.  His mother Mrs. Ethel Arnold of Indianapolis received the notice from the war department His father is Earl Arnold of New Winchester. Vernon, 23 years old, was born and reared in Greencastle, was graduated from the local high school and will be well remembered here by many acquaintances. His father operated a monument shop and later a grocery store here for a number of years before the family moved from the city. Vernon enlisted on August 10, 1942 and took his bomber training at George Field, Vincennes and at Avon Park, Florida and has been in England since about the first of April and relatives were of the opinion that he was reported missing on his first mission over Germany.  His wife received her last letter from him, dated April 28.
